PERMANENCY: Selections from the Permanent Collection
Aug 14 - Sep 28, 2014
By definition, museums are object-based organizations.
Through the preservation and exhibition of these objects, we educate ourselves and future generations. It is through their permanent collections that museums are defined. We know museums by how they care for, exhibit, and grow their collections. A museum‘s board of directors has a duty to ensure that the items accessioned into the permanent collection are responsibly maintained, exhibited, used, and preserved.
This exhibition presents art recently accessioned by the Board of Directors which will remain available for future exhibition and study. The Museum maintains two distinct collections: a permanent collection of accessioned works—works that are to forever remain in the permanent collection—and a study collection. The Leslie-Lohman Museum now has more than 24,000 objects in its possession. To date, the Leslie-Lohman Board has accessioned over 1,300 of these objects. We are busy cataloging these works according to museum standards. Both collections are maintained with equal care.
As we work hard to develop our permanent collection, we strive to represent the best art that speaks to and is made by the LGBTQ community. We want to thank those donors who make the acquisition of new works possible and those who donate work to us – particularly artists and their families. We also want to thank the supporters of the Fritz Lohman Museum Fund and the members of the Pinto-Wight Society.
Their generous donations allow us to purchase new work.
