ARCH
Aug 07 - Sep 01, 2019
Arch is an experimental exhibition during which four different artists/collectives—Savannah Knoop, micha cárdenas, XFR Collective, and Memory Foam—will each takeover part of Leslie-Lohman Museum for one week at a time. Every artist/collective will present a separate project, yet they are united under the title of Arch in their shared attention to the structures of support of queer collectivities. Additional programming will take place each Thursday night from 6-8PM.
The artists/collectives in Arch explore these themes through modes of durational performance, storytelling, archiving, and play. Savannah Knoop presents an interactive, durational performance that grapples with defining power, conflict, and intimacy within a set of given terms. micha cárdenas’s augmented reality game allows users to experience a climate change event in order to deeply consider how climate change disproportionately affects immigrants, trans people, and disabled people. XFR Collective will offer digitization services by appointment for analog video and audio media, while providing a space to discuss strategies for preserving personal and community media. Memory Foam’s site-specific artwork invites visitors to address and engage with notions of history, community, and connection via prompting from an audio guide.
Arch engages artists to activate the architectures of the museum in experimental and inventive ways. By placing operational power in the hands of artists/collectives, Arch expands the boundaries and definitions of what a museum exhibition can look and feel like, opening up possibilities for liveness, participation, preservation, and collaboration.
